Duncan Jones’s MOON Review
Duncan Jones’s Moon is in the same vein as sold schooled science fiction classics such as Ridley Scott’s Alien,Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 A space Odyssey and Douglas trumbell’s Silent Running. It is as much an inspiration by the seminal classics as it’s a homage to them and this makes Moon a Towering Achievement by first time director Duncan Jones(Yes,he is the same Zowie Bowie –son of David Bowie).
Moon is a one man show from start to finish by Sam Rockwell who in my opinion is one of the most underrated thespians out there today.Rockwell plays Astronaut Sam Bell who has been stationed on the moon for the last 3 years and is ready to head back home when the film opens.Bell works for Lunar Industries whose primary job is to extract Helium 3(A rarity in the future) from the lunar soil and get it back to our starving and dying planet.Like Most movie enterprises the company has hidden agendas and works for self profit.
Sam Bell only has a Robot(displaying more emotions than most actors from transformers 2) by the name of GERTY as company on the lunar base and goes about doing his daily chores in a monotonous manner, waiting for the day he is relieved of his duty and can happily go back to his wife, daughter and planet but things take a wrong turn when he starts hallucinating and seeing things. He crashes his lunar rover and is bought back to base but soon realizes he is being kept in the dark about some very important issues.
Moon is a hard-core science fiction film for folks who adore real sci-fi.Movies that challenge your perceptions and make you question what is sanity. In other words it is intelligent science fiction refreshingly different from the well executed but hollow Star treks and AVATARS to the godawful Transformers and Babylon AD.
Looking at the film it is hard to believe its made by a first time director. The Film looks STUNNING and actually makes you sit uo and take notice to the fact that no matter how evolved CGI gets ,real production sets and designs will always hold the edge.Reminiscent of Alien and 2001ASO this is an atmospheric piece of work and kudos to all involved.
All in all I will say the obvious if you have understood my stance on this film-I LOVED IT and am thankful for the return of intelligent science fiction features which rely on more than gore, sex and CGI.Its been a great year for sci-fi loves with low budget features such as Moon and District 9 makingthe cut while the massively budgeted Terminator Salvation(Yup,I liked it) and AVATAR raking in the green.
If you are into sci-fi don’t dare miss it,If you are not ,this is a great way to start..
